Sicily, Italy: Your Next Holiday Destination

Why You Should Travel to Sicily for Your Next Holiday

Sicily has been seducing travelers for years with its cultural treasures, natural wonders, and culinary offerings. This island is located at the tip of Italy, which gives it the perfect weather to wander through quaint villages while sampling Sicilian delicacies and enjoying the sights.

Depending on when you visit, you have a vast array of options to see, do, eat, and enjoy—from hiking up one of the world’s most active volcanoes to walking through ancient Greek and Roman ruins, from swimming in azure seas to sampling fresh seafood and pizza.

Why is Sicily a great place to visit?

This island offers many incredible temptations for even the most experienced of travellers. Here are four reasons to go to Sicily for your next vacation.

1. The beaches are beautiful.

Since it’s surrounded by the Tyrrhenian, the Ionian, and the Mediterranean seas, Sicily boasts of some of the best beaches in the world, ranging from sandy beaches with white or golden sand to rocky inlets.

Combine these with Sicily’s wonderful warm weather, which you can enjoy from May to October, and you have the perfect setting for a dream beach vacation.

2. It’s a gastronomic hotspot.

Sicily is a heaven for foodies and wine lovers. Whether you go to a small taverna (an Italian pub), a pizzeria (primarily serves pizza with wine), a ristorante (a top-grade fine dining restaurant), or even just a street market, you will always have an incredible food and wine experience.

We have to give a special mention to Sicily’s most popular local dessert: the cannoli, a cone-shaped pastry shell filled with sweet ricotta and topped with sugar, pistachios, candied fruits, or chocolate ganache.

Of course, you also have to take a bite of Sicilian pizza prepared and baked traditionally, right where this mouthwatering dish came from.

3.  You will wonder at incredible historical sites and ruins.

Sicily is dotted with museums, historical sites, and churches, many of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. You must have heard of Syracuse, which was once a key city of the Greek empire and now a major tourist attraction in Sicily.

Amp up your trip by going through some of the best-preserved ruins from Greek and Roman eras like the Greek theatre in Taormina and the  Roman mosaics in Villa Romana del Casale.

4.  You can have fun at an active volcano.

One of the world’s most active and tallest volcanoes in Europe is probably not in your bucket list of places to visit. But you can’t go to Sicily and not visit Mount Etna. Tours to the volcano’s peaks are offered during summer months, while ski resorts cater to winter sports enthusiasts during the cold months.

Of course, these activities are not allowed when the volcano is spewing fire and ash. But to witness Mount Etna’s eruption (from a safe distance) is in itself a spectacular wonder to behold.

A visit to Sicily will always be an authentic experience of old-world Italy. Even if you visit for just a few days, you will be engulfed in the laid back Italian culture of welcoming hosts who love to eat, drink, and enjoy life. Ci vediamo in Sicilia.
